Power Wood Energy was established to be a primary producer of steam-treated black pellets to be used in power stations, steel mills and industrial factories as an alternative to coal.
As a by-product of its black pellet production process, the company will also refine furfural as a bio-based chemical to replace petrochemicals used in fuels, pharmaceuticals, beauty, building and other staple products.
Each of these renewable commodities will be produced as part of a circular economy which uses steam treatment technology to convert Canada's low-grade waste stream wood into high-value commodities for global markets.
Produced from wildfire-damaged deadwood, beetle-infested tree stock and forestry industry residuals using Valmet BioTrac™ steam treatment technology , they will offer energy companies a pathway for decarbonizing coal-fired infrastructure.
Steam-treated black pellets offer improved energy content, fuel consistency, moisture resistance and grindability for operators of coal-fired generating stations.
They experience less degradation and fines generation during handling and can be shipped and stored in open-air environments under suitable conditions, creating an opportunity for customers to reduce transportation and warehousing costs.
In producing steam-treated black pellets, Power Wood Energy aims to to contribute to reductions in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90% compared with coal.
Refined from natural hardwood sugars extracted during Valmet's BioTrac™ steam treatment process, furfural will be recovered to provide organic alternatives to fossil-fuel based petrochemicals used in a wide range of industrial applications.
As an organic compound, furfural can be upgraded into furan, furfuryl alcohol and furfuryl ethers through specific chemical pathways.
Across all derivatives and its base formula, furfural can be used in downstream applications for the production of jet fuels, bricks, ceramics, fibreglass, fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, foods, fragrances, cosmetics, rubbers, solvents, lubricants and plastics.
In producing furfural, Power Wood Energy aims to contribute to reductions in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions related to refining petrochemicals and greater price stability for their alternatives.
